DONALDSON: THE RIGHT (FILTRATION) SOLUTION
Donaldson Advanced Filtration explains why ePTFE films and laminates are a vital component for medical device venting.

Filter media for use in medical devices must be clean, protect against bacteria, chemically inert, thermally stable, non shedding, provide resistance to leakage and blockage and provide high air and flow rates, Tetratex® ePTFE films and laminates are the ideal solution.

Donaldson Advanced Filtration, worldwide manufacturer and supplier of Tetratex® ePTFE membranes, films and laminates, has invested heavily in continuous product development and innovative research to create a product range which can fulfill the toughest specifications of the medical device market.

Vital properties

The result is Tetratex membrane – a filter media which features a unique microporous structure and hydrophobic characteristics, providing a highly breathable material. This enables the ePTFE to repel liquids whilst allowing gases to pass through, providing contamination control on sub-micron particulate – making Tetratex ePTFE membrane ideal for a wide range of applications including vent caps, drainage bags, IV administration sets, medical device enclosures, ostomy bags, urine bags, packaging vents and spike vents, blood filters, face masks, transdermal drug delivery products, and wound care.

Specifically engineered to provide complete protection against the most demanding medical device conditions, the benefits that the Tetratex ePTFE membrane provides are chemical inertness, a non-shedding, minimal extractable construction, a wide operating temperature range (-250 to +280°c), proven bacterial challenge and toxicity tested to USP 23 Class VI. Providing a highly flexible and drapeable material, Tetratex ePTFE membrane is chemically stable, resulting in superior performance and comfort in almost any environment.

For the patient this translates into a product which provides total peace of mind and excellent performance, in ostomy applications, for dialysis and in wound care.

Ventilation and odour control

For manufacturers servicing the ostomy market providing a comfortable product, resistant to leakage, which allow gases to escape whilst preventing unpleasant odours can become a great challenge. The hydrophobic properties of the Tetratex ePTFE membrane stop leakages, provides ventilation and breathability, by managing the build up of gases. Odour control technology provides the patient with peace of mind and complete confidence in their treatment, taking away the worry of embarrassing odours.

Contamination control

The high efficiency Tetratex ePTFE membrane used in dialysis transducer protector applications is inert and capable of eliminating problems caused by contamination, thereby providing excellent chemical resistance and protection against dirt, bacteria and blood borne pathogens. Tetratex ePTFE encourages a fast response of haemodialysis equipment to venous pressure signals.

Barrier to infection

Tetratex ePTFE membrane is a highly breathable material which allows skin to heal and regenerate whilst offering a barrier to infection and complete protection against water. The soft and drapeable properties of the membrane make it comfortable to wear and easy to remove, ideal for wound care applications.
