  • IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DOWNFLO® OVAL: DUST COLLECTION MORE ECONOMICAL AND SERVICE-FRIENDLY.

The economical advantage of the new DFO series, used world-wide for effective industrial dust collection, can now also be used in lower air volume ranges. Three new compact dust collectors are available as ready-to-fit, plug and play solutions.

The success of this dedusting technology is based on the innovative Downflo®Oval filter cartridges with oval cross-section and the Ultra-Web® filter medium, which is characterised by a very high filtration efficiency rate of 99.999 %, on 0,5 micron dust particles. A nano-fibre layer ensures that even the smallest particles are precipitated on the filter surface. This leads to the formation of an even filter cake which can be cleaned away reliably and with little energy. For this reason, filters with the Ultra-Web® medium feature a very low differential pressure even after long service. In contrast to this, conventional filters bind some of the dust inside the filter layers, with the result that the differential pressure quickly rises and the dust can only be cleaned off inadequately.

The use of the patented ExtraLife filter cleaning system improves the efficiency of cleaning by almost 30%. Due to the lower height of the filter pleats, the medium is so strong that no mechanical impairment occurs even after very frequent cleaning. This extends the service life of the filter.

To exploit the effectiveness of the oval filter cartridges, compact, flow-optimised housings have been developed for the DFO dust collector series. They are supplied as ready-to-fit, plug and play solutions with integrated controller, fan (five fan sizes are available), silencer, spark trap and dust container. In comparison with conventional models of the same size of housing, an air throughput of approximately 10% higher is achieved. These advantages are particularly apparent in the new, small DFO models 1-1, 1-2 and 3-3.

Substantially lower energy consumption

Apart from the higher performance, the lowest possible energy consumption was also a primary goal for the developers. In dust filtration, two main aspects must be taken into account. The first is the lowest possible differential pressure in the initial state, but also – and this is even more important – in the mid life, operational state of the filter. The lower the differential pressure, the less energy is required to convey the air stream through the filter.

The second major aspect determining the energy consumption is cleaning. Although the ExtraLife filter cleaning system operates around 30% more efficiently, not more energy is consumed. The higher efficiency also has a positive effect on the differential pressure, which is lower with an optimally cleaned filter. The two aspects of differential pressure and efficient cleaning therefore interact closely.

Higher filter performance with the same size

Around 16,000 service hours in the laboratory and development were necessary to develop the new Downflo®Oval filter to series production capability. Over 635,000 kg of test dust were consumed. However, this work was worthwhile, as significant improvements were made in dust filtration technology, which is generally regarded to be fully developed. Expressed in figures: by optimising the filter cartridges, cleaning system and filter housing, a filter performance of around 25% higher (in comparison with conventional models) was achieved. In many cases, the user can therefore choose a smaller housing and save costs, or obtain a higher performance from the same size.

With these properties, the Downflo®Oval dust filters address a wide range of applications and performance, extending from the woodworking industry and metalworking (grinding, welding, sand blasting...) to the processing of abrasive materials. Donaldson offers the series in 26 sizes for 1 to 128 filter cartridges. Numerous options simplify the adaptation of the filters to the individual application.

Service: quick and easy

Service-friendliness was also taken into account in the development of the new generation of dust filters. A quick-release system fulfils the conditions for a rapid exchange of the filter cartridges. Also, an effective service department undertakes maintenance of the filter systems and, if requested, responsibility for the exchange of the filter elements at the optimum time.
