Just after the introduction of the new Ultra-Filter generation, with which compressed air users can achieve substantial gains in efficiency and reduce their costs for compressed air, Donaldson has now presented a new series of sterile filter elements for process air treatment based on the same fundamental developments.
The heart of the filter element is the new deep filter medium with a hydrophobic plasma coating. The water-repellent coating gives the elements higher resistance in CIP processes and also reduces the differential pressure during drying after steam sterilisation. For the user, this means higher reliability and a long service life of the elements under the most diverse operating conditions.
The pleating of the filter medium also has the effect of increasing efficiency. This significantly increases the effective filter area with the result that a very high particle absorbance capacity is achieved and the differential pressure remains constant over long periods in use.
Extensive comparisons in the test laboratories at Donaldson and practical tests have shown that these design measures lead to a long-term reduction of the differential pressure. Conventional sterile filter elements have a substantially higher differential pressure both in compressed air filtration and in pressure filtration under atmospheric conditions, i.e. in simulated tank aeration.
Designated P-SRF N, the new elements achieve a high separation rate of 99.99998% with regard to oil droplets with 0.2 µm diameter (DOP test). The new filter was successfully tested by an independent institute (TNO / The Netherlands) for the filtration of bacteria (Brevundimonas diminuta) and viruses/phages (MS-2 coliphages). The filter elements can be used in a temperature range of 20 to +200 oC and are suitable for steam sterilisation as well as sterilisation with H2O2 (VPHP sterilisation).
The filter medium of the P-SRF N elements is chemically inert and is modified specifically for the filtration of bacteria, phages and viruses. The validated filtration rate ensured the highest degree of reliability for all aseptic process applications of compressed and process air, for example in food production, in packaging processes and in the aeration of tanks and fermenters in breweries, dairies and systems for biotechnology. Ten different sizes are available for flow rates from 60 to 3000 m3/h, and Donaldson naturally offers the matching filter housings for sterile compressed air filtration and tank aeration.
